Tips to safely put and remove your mask

If you’re going to be using a protective face mask, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with how to put it on and remove it. Paying attention to this aspect is important as it does affect the protective and sanitary quality of the mask.

Luckily, there are plenty of guidelines available and if you take a look at them, you will know that wearing a face mask involves more than just popping the mask on and leaving the house. To help you out, we will be taking a close look at this aspect as well.

We’re going to be using the guidelines shared by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to them, the following is what you should to properly wear and remove a protective face mask:

Steps to Put On a Mask

Putting on a mask isn’t difficult and definitely doesn’t involve rocket science but taking some precautions beforehand can help you out. When putting on a mask, you need to do the following:

Wash Your Hands

Wash and disinfect your hands thoroughly before you put the mask on your face. This ensures that any germs, pollutants or more don’t transfer onto the mask. If that happens, you end up defeating the purpose of wearing a mask. In case you are outside and need to wear a mask, use some hand sanitizer.

Only Touch the Bands

After you have cleaned your hands, pick the mask only by using the bands, ties or the ear loops on the mask. Never pick the mask up from the center or from any side. Additionally, make sure that you’re gentle and don’t cause any tears.

Once the protectiveface mask is on, just check to see if it is comfortable, sits properly on your face and does not make it difficult for you to talk through the face mask.

Steps to Take the Mask Off

After you’re done, taking the mask off should also be done with the same level of care and precautions as you followed to put it on. When taking off a mask, you should use the following method:

Wash Your Hands

Before taking the mask off, wash your hands thoroughly. This is because after spending your time outdoors, there is no knowing what kind of germs might be on your hands. By touching your mask, you could end up allowing the germs to infect you. Again, if you don’t have access to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer.

Do Not Touch the Mask

Once your hands are clean, do not touch the mask. Instead, make sure to only handle the ear loops, ties and bands to remove it. Minimize contact with the mask as much as possible when you are taking it off. You can then dispose of it or wash it and reuse it as needed.

By paying attention to these steps, you can learn how to safely put on and remove a protective face mask without any worries.
